In exploring the vastness of space it seems we have forgotten about the depths of our oceans. It’s curious to note the collective fascination for Mars when human eyes are yet to view the bottom of many of our seas. However an argument for this ignorance can be made. Why explore the deepest waters when it doesn’t reveal an exciting future worth the trip? The counterargument being, “Well how would you know, having never been?”
There is a deep internal pattern within each of us that guides us towards our purpose. This pattern is known as the Career Archetype.
However there is a problem. Rarely do we know what it is. Our lack of awareness of it can cause misunderstandings and misdiagnoses. Wrong career paths are pursued and an overwhelm of options are cited as a symptom. This internal pattern that holds the answers within us has the frustrating habit of hiding until we seek it in the right way.
“I went and lived with Monks in a monastery for 3 months”
It wasn’t the first time I had heard these words. “It was a beautiful experience however I’m still confused about my purpose in life.” And it wasn’t the first time I had heard this sentiment follow it either. In hearing statements like this so frequently it has become obvious that the search for meaning has a cliche attached to it. To expect the answers when traveling the world, to stumble on it in a worn-out book, to be told by a guru on a mountain who has never met you that they know. All beautiful storytelling devices that romanticise the process, sure. But the best way? No, this isn’t it.
The Career Archetype requires a deep dive into the waters of oneself
Only then will it reveal itself to us. This inner knowing can occur in our own bedroom as much as it can come from an ashram in Thailand. Because it’s not where we are that causes this revelation to happen, but in the act of self-confrontation.
This quiet and often uncomfortable act of self-confrontation work can cause an avoidance of self. With neglected passions, fears buried long ago and ignored truths that could not be destroyed, it’s no surprise people avoid their own murky depths. Yet the Career Archetype remains patiently waiting to be unearthed.
But with reason to avoid, know that there is more reason to confront. Our calling is on the line. Rather than seeking our vocation in everything but the person doing the seeking, we can turn around. Coming face to face with our own eyes. Seeing ourselves anew. Completing our own inner image by requiring ourselves to look upon it.
Though we may feel that the search for answers is outside of ourselves, it’s not
It's found in the recognition of the truths we've buried long ago. Our Career Archetype—the pattern that reveals our calling—is not elusive because it’s hidden in a far away place, but because it hides in the corners of our psyche that we dare not tread.
To unearth it, one must do what most won’t and dive into the dark waters of self, confronting untended parts. Much like space and the ocean, we are drawn to chase the far away. But it’s the depths beneath us, in the water we are treading where we can’t see our feet that our calling quietly stirs. Waiting for us.
