Vocations 101: The Action Phase

The second phase of knowing your vocation

Once you have found your vocation you’ll need to bring it into the world. This is where people new to this inner knowing can lose the connection. Fresh from an introspective period where they mapped their own interior landscape, they now need to take on a completely different way of being.

It’s no longer about reflecting and is now about taking real steps in the world.

Action is of a fiery nature, it pushes outwards

Taking action has a fiery temperament and is outward oriented. If you think of a fireplace with the fire burning within, note that it exudes heat into the room. It doesn’t withhold heat. It pushes it outwards. When we take action it needs to be out in the world rather than reflective. The irony is that for people that are naturally reflective, they’ll want to reflect on how to do an action which will typically take them further within themselves which can cause inaction.

However, your vocation needs to be walked externally. Once you’ve found your calling it can only be solidified through action taking in the world. Reaching out to a stranger to see if they’re interested in what you’re offering, recording a video to share your knowledge, sending an email to an employee who’s working at a company you’re interested in. These are all forms of actions which can be found in the second phase. In the first phase knowing the path is dominated by introspection. In the second phase knowing the path is dominated by action.

Why taking action can be difficult in the modern world

There’s a lot of reasons people can find this second phase difficult. One of the main ones being that we have a consuming obsession in our world. Taking in more and more information everyday. Social media content, newly released books, 3 hour long podcasts, online courses, endless news cycles and the list goes on. When it comes to pursuing a vocation it can be hard to focus on the pursuit. With the world wanting you to use any extra time you have to be in a consumption state.

Taking in so much information can naturally lead to action avoidance. With such a flurry of information waiting for you around every corner, there might be a sentiment of self-doubt. Thinking, “I should watch another video, then I’ll be ready.” We can even take in high quality information which still puts us into an introspective state, distracting us from our calling. Which is why you can get people who have read all the books and done all the course, yet they’ve made minimal progress.

Most people under-do action in their vocations

It’s typical for people to under do action in this phase. It burns a lot of personal energy and causes our external world to change. If you think about someone transitioning from a 9-5 office job to applying for a mentorship with an ayurveda practitioner, it’s much easier to go through the normal afterwork routine than sit down at the computer and fill in the forms. Yet, this is where visible changes begins to occur. Where the desired consequences are made real. Once we truly understand this phase and it’s power for transformation, we can completely change our reality.

Once we start taking action and receiving real world feedback, our inner knowledge is met with an outer validation. Further cementing our conviction in our direction and giving us an unwavering sense of belief in our path.
