Queen Elizabeth II was on a Temptation Path

🎥 Substack Video | And what we can learn from her story

In this video I explore temptation paths through the lens of Queen Elizabeth II. There is a grief to our unlived lives, and this story shows that particular grief in its heartbreaking and brutal truth.

📖 If you’d like to read the article, I’ve included it below.

What if I told you that even the late Queen yearned for another path?

My partner and I have recently been watching the crown which is a retelling of the life Queen Elizabeth II and her path. During the episode it became clear the late Queen had been walking a temptation path, continually attempting to pursue her calling but never being able to commit to it.

In one scene Queen Elizabeth is met with the Prime Minister of the time who informs her that they’re going to be devaluing the national currency. To his shock, she doesn’t seem quite interested and instead informs him that she’s planning an overseas trip to France to witness how the French breed racehorses. Later on she travels to the US to gain further insight into race horses and continually puts off her duties to pursue her passion.

The dissatisfied grey of Temptation Paths

As the episode unfolds we find out that a coup is being set to overthrow the government because of the devaluation of currency as well as the government's plans to take control of the Bank of England. Which leads me to the most important scene.

At the end of a long day, looking at racehorses and the most innovative techniques that the US is using to develop their horses, the Queen is sitting with a friend and says, “Somehow today has managed to be one of the most enjoyable days of my life. And at the same time one of the most depressing.”

She then confides in her friend that breeding horses, owning horses, racing horses, is how she would like to spend all of her time.

She confesses: “It’s what makes me truly happy and I actually think it’s what I was born to do.”

Experiencing her True Vocation

She then goes to say that being Queen was a job she was never “meant” to do. Her friend then tries to ease her pain by suggesting that she hid it well and made it seem otherwise. Which didn’t ease the pain for the Queen, instead speaking of the pain of gaining a glimpse into the life that could have been — a taste of the life unlived.

As she continues to reveal more of her true path she’s interrupted by royal staff for a phone call, whereby the Prime Minister on the other end informs her that a coup is underway.

And with that, she throws her unlived path away which was briefly glimpsed and returns back to England. Back to her duties.

Do you know what Queen Elizabeth the second, when asked as a child what she wanted to be when she grew up? A horse. Which is hilarious but also shows, she knew from the beginning that being involved with horses was meant for her and there she was, walking a life she never truly wanted.

The joy (and grief) of her unlived life

And although she had every reason to believe that this yearning for an unlived path could never be satisfied, this was simply a belief she had which was not only a lie, but causing her unnecessary suffering.

We must become conscious of our calling and then pursue it relentlessly, even if it does mean breaking with supposed enforced, often self-enforced, responsibilities.

I promise you, if she’d pursued horses there would’ve been another sovereign within days and the royal family would have continued on. Unfortunately, she carried that burden and never got to experience her calling in its totality.

It’s a radical thought that gets truer the more I dive into careers — most of the people in our society, even the ones who are viewed as knowing their direction by the world, can be misaligned in their careers and on temptation paths.
