When Demosthenes learnt that his inheritance had been squandered by his legal guardians the need for justice brewed from within.
How could his legal guardians be so incompetent?
Greed had devoured them. His father had left him $11,000,000.00 in today’s money and he was going to receive none of it. Rather than sitting idly by, he decided to take them to court. Even with his stutter and poor pronunciation, he was determined to persuade anyone that could hear his voice that he had been wronged.
Anyone who speaks in their daily life will find that the Public Orator has so much to teach them
Demosthenes, a stutterer, went on to prove that his guardians stole from him. He also went on to become the greatest orator of all time. Quitilian, Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson and Cicero were all inspired by this Public Orator. In studying him and others I understood why this Career Archetype can be so powerful. How the voice can change the world. Here are 5 lessons it taught me:
1. Articulation is a skill
The Public Orator isn’t skilled in the art of persuasion and speech immediately. I frequently found stories where speech issues were a problem. Language barriers needed to be overcome. Challenges arose in their life that required them to speak in such a way that it moved people’s opinions in their favour. By starting at the bottom and learning every facet of their craft, it helped them to realise that articulation is a skill. To venture into the upper limits of their gift they couldn’t rely solely on talent. They needed to hone their abilities through relentless trial and practice. Having a silver tongue at birth would have choked their potential.
2. The crowd blows like the wind
The Public Orator is able to sense the world’s opinion and use it to their advantage. Do they double down with the crowd, exaggerating and fueling what is already known. Making those who listen feel more convicted. Or do they create doubt? Causing people to question and evaluate everything. Depending on their aim they can change where the wind is blowing and push the boat of culture in the direction of their desire. They understand the power of the masses.
3. Emotion is the great persuader, not logic
The great orators focus on how their message feels to the audience. Do the stats and facts matter? Of course. But if people can’t feel it they won’t be persuaded. A laugh, a triumphant cry and a story that has people on the verge of tears are powerful weapons in the arsenal of this Career Archetype. Rather than pull out a graph they tug at your heartstrings knowing the song, not the numbers, will change your tune.
4. Preparation is part of the performance
The Public Orator shines when they are prepared. Stories of great orators preparing for months for a single act is built into its mythology. Your preparation decides your fate. It may seem spontaneous and there may be acts of spontaneity, however they’ve been working in secret on what they need to say. They understand the moment and how everything prior to it happening changes the fate of their outcome.
5. Good speakers are precise, great speakers create believers
The Public Orator Career Archetype understands the technical side of speaking. Clear wording. Proper dictation. Tonality. Spacing and rhythm. However, they go beyond this. They know that it’s not simply about saying the right words. It’s about bringing energy and intention to those words. By bringing in the feeling that hits another person’s soul, it energises them – instilling life within.
