Why spiritually inclined people need to embrace nonlinear career paths
"Linear paths disintegrate under spiritual pressure"
Linear paths disintegrate under spiritual pressure.
To find oneself walking the correct path and graduating from university with an internship secured follows the mass applauded storyline. However when people arrive at this dream only to find that it lacks anything solid, they search for something deeper.
The laid out step-by-step path is reevaluated with the realisation setting in — they need to go off path.
What is a nonlinear career path?
A nonlinear career path is a career that isn’t bound by an absolute methodical step-by-step direction.
Though people who walk nonlinear paths do it best when they have an outline and planned steps for their path, they remain open to the possibility of change and adapting along the way. By doing this they can unfold their path organically and remain in alignment as their expectations of the path meet their reality.
This is particularly useful for spiritually inclined people who know they need to develop their soul as much as pursue their career.
Take the opportunities before you’re ready
Being a spiritually inclined person means that you’re developing all the layers of yourself. The spiritual layer being particularly important.
When opportunities arise, like unlocked doors waiting for us to step through them, it’s a part of our development to take them. Perhaps you’ve been asked to present at a workshop before you’re ready or to come on a podcast even though you’ve never done it before. Rejecting it because it’s not in the plan can cause you to miss what you needed to do.
Embracing nonlinear career paths means taking the opportunity even before we’re ready.

You’re not going backwards, even if it feels like it
There are times where you will need to go backwards in order to progress.
I’ve seen people I’ve worked with over the years have to take holiday leave, sabbatical leave and quit jobs to re-stabilise. If they had stayed they might have progressed their career, gained a promotion, received a big end of year bonus or increased revenue by 50%.
But what of their soul?
Whilst it may seem to some that they took a backwards step, they needed to come back to themselves and nurture their internal terrain before taking further action in the world. Even though it may have felt like they were going backwards, they reenergised, deepened their roots and were able to come back to the world stronger than ever.
They never would have gone as far as they did afterwards if they didn’t stop momentarily.
Linearity isn’t how life works
As much as we would like a step-by-step plan for every footstep we’re about to take, life has gifted us with the inability to see the total future.
At any moment things could change.
Meeting a new person or leaving someone you’ve been with for too long. A tragic accident or bumping into an old friend you haven’t seen in years. Having a spiritual awakening or quitting your job spontaneously. These unplanned moments can be pivotal in shaping our life.
To see life as steps of ABC is to live a sort of manufactured life.
One that suggests life is as simple as high school, university, internship, good job, family, kids and a mortgage. Life is much more and understanding the element of inevitable chaos will help live an enriching life. By embracing nonlinear paths we move with life rather than against it.

This speaks directly to me. I'm currently trying living this. Left a loveless 4 year relationship, spontaneously quit not one but two jobs, reconnected with myself and felt more lost than ever and now I'm pouring my heart out on here without expectations or a routine. While I can't seem to find my balance, something keeps telling me–eventually, I'll be alright.
Honey, going on sabbatical saved my life. I was in Higher Ed for three years and burnt the fuck OUT. What was supposed to be a few months off turned into quitting, resting for a year and a half, and pursuing art/design as a freelancer. My spirit and Spirits have never been more aligned and in harmony.
