For our 4th edition of Path Studies we turn to vocational romanticism, vocational pragmatism and why we need both in our vocation. This lesson forms part of our continuing studies in the practice of vocation.

A lesson on why we need both vocational romanticism and vocational pragmatism

If the path has no romanticism in it, it will fail to inspire. But if it has no practicality in it, it will not come to pass. Understanding this relationship between all that we can be and how it happens is vital if we are to reach the celestial height of our calling. We need both the elevation and hope that romanticism provides, as well as the rigorous steps that pragmatism offers.

Yet this relationship has a bitter history. Viewed in Kierkegaardian framing as an, “Either/Or” choice, many select either a romantic world-view or a pragmatic one. Both parties shirk the claims of the other.

The romantics say that without dreams life is drained of colour, hope and meaning.

The pragmatics express that pursuing one’s passion is a pipe dream and charade. Hearing, “That’s unrealistic” is a common response to grand aims.
